CPSU Membership Tax Receipts

CPSU Membership Fees are tax deductable. This year we are emailing tax receipts to all our members who have registered their email address with us. The email will be sent in the first week of July, and you should expect to have received it by Friday 8th July.

For those members who do not have an email address registered with us we will send out a paper copy.

If you have not received a receipt by Friday 8th July please contact us and we can check our records and arrange for one to be emailed or printed for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is this email receipt an acceptable format for the tax department?

A: Yes, it is. You can read the ATO rules on this matter here: http://www.ato.gov.au/taxprofessionals/content.aspx?doc=/content/78388.htm&page=3&H3

Q: Can you send this as a PDF?

A: At the moment we have deliberately chosen to send these receipts in the body of the email. Because our members predominately use their work email for union related matters, a mass email to all our members can put quite a strain on individual departmental mail servers. For this reason we never send attachments with our bulk member emails. Email servers need to scan attachments for emails, many automatically quarantine them, and in a worst case scenario and in those departments where we have many thousands of members, we could cause all kinds of IT problems. We choose to be a responsible user of the government IT infrastructure.

If you would like to receive your email in a hardcopy format please contact the union and we can mail one out to you.

Q: Do I need to print this out? It doesn't print nicely.

A: Some email clients and printers don't do a very good job of formatting printing of emails, this is true. You don't need to attach a copy of your receipt when you submit your tax return, you are simply required to be able to prove the deductions if the tax office ever asks. We recommend that you file your email away in case it's needed in the future, and simply advise your accountant of the amount he should claim against your union fees.

Q: If I lose this email can it be reissued?

A: Yes, the union keeps all financial records of members (and former members) for at least 7 years. We are able to produce a tax receipt for any year that you may require, since you are only required to keep your receipts for 5 years. To have a receipt reissued please contact the union.
